Structure: Waste Water Treatment PlantRemoval: 1,700,000 sf (158,000 sm) @ ½ inch (13 mm)Owner: Los Angles County Sanitation DistrictLocation: Carson, CAContractor: J.F. Shea Construction, Inc., Walnut, CA This project involved the restoration of the entire existing secondary treatment plant. Rampart removed between ¼ and ¾ inch of existing deteriorated concrete from the surfaces of the biological reactors, water channels, clarifier tanks and the secondary pumping station. Deterioration of the concrete was caused by biogenic sulfide corrosion, a low pH condition common in wastewater environments. A micro-silica shotcrete was applied to all prepared surfaces.
