When Rampart was asked to remove concrete from a dam spillway 50 feet under water Rampart took the challenge. Rampart designed and built the Underwater Hydrodemolition Unit. This unit was placed on a barge along with its electrical power pack and moved over the area to be removed. The unit was lowered to the floor of the spillway and placed into position by a diver. The spillway floor was severely eroded so when the unit was in position the diver leveled the unit by adjusting each of the hydraulic legs. When the unit was in position, leveled and ready to cut the diver released the safety override which signaled Rampart’s technician to
begin concrete removal. Since dive time is limited, the Underwater Unit proved very effective in performing the removal while minimizing diver fatigue.
