Structure:                                              Bridge Deck
Quantity & Depth of Removal:            21,400 sm  @ 9 mm
Owner:                                                 Oregon Dept. of Transportation
Location:                                              I-205, Portland, OR
Contractor:                                           James W. Fowler Co., Dallas, OR

The need:

Scarification of bridge decks in preparation for a micro-silica overlay using hydrodemolition.  Control Water and debris from entering a protected stream and from flowing into adjacent live traffic lanes.  A Pour Ready Surface.

The solution:

Water and debris were vacuumed from the hydrodemolition unit continuously during the operation.  A rough profile was exposed by the hydrodemolition process, creating an excellent bonding surface for the micro-silica overlay.

The bridges were cleaned and prepared for the overlay using a specially designed undercarriage vacuum deck on Rampart’s high-volume vacuum truck.  As the vacuum unit drove over the scarified surface, the undercarriage deck sprayed 10,000-PSI water jets while simultaneously vacuuming up water and debris to provide a “pour-ready” surface.
