How We Remove Paint

The roadway paint removal system consists of an ultra-high pressure (UHP) water pump, operating at 36,000 psi and 16 gpm mounted on a truck which carries approximately 4,000 gallons of water.  The UHP water is carried through special hoses to a 12-inch wide, 16 jet spray bar mounted in the blast head located on the front of the truck.  The spray bar rotates at up to 2,000 rpm.  The multiple jets and rotation of the spray bar uniformly applies the UHP water to the surface as the vehicle advances down the roadway.  All types of line stripping including latex, thermo, epoxy and reinforced tape are quickly removed at rates up to 5,000 lf per hour.  The UHP water jet system can be used to remove paint from concrete and asphalt.

Immediately following the paint removal, the roadway is vacuumed cleaned using a standard vacuum-sweeper truck.  Paint debris can be transported to a designated location for disposal.  Cleaning water is discharged at the edge of the roadway where it is allowed to re-absorb into the ground.

Paint can be removed from rumble strips with damaging the ground deprision in the asphalt surface.  This shows how the water jet can reach down into the surface to remove paint.
