Because Rampart uses ultra-high pressure (UHP) water jets no concrete is too strong. Multiple cores were taken from an old bridge deck in New Jersey and compressive strengths taken. The average strength was 10,400 psi. Rampart’s UHP water jet had no problem removing 3.5 and 5-inch deep strips along both sides of the bridge to expose existing truss bars. Specialty concretes such as latex modified concrete, micro-silica, high-strength concretes can be removed using hydrodemolition. Hydrodemolition systems operating at 15,000-psi to 20,000-psi may not be able to remove high-strength concretes. Typically, the water jet pressure must be 3.5 times the compressive strength of the concrete for effective hydrodemolition. Equipment operating at 15,000-psi would not effectively demolish concrete above 4,300-psi compressive strength. Rampart’s UHP water jet operating at 36,000-psi was able to effectively demolish the 10,400-psi concrete.
